Some of you may know Necrophobic, old-school Swedish death metal from the late 1990’s.
In Aphelion is the resurrection of these talents lead by main songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Sebastian Ramstedt joined with his band partner Johan Bergebäck and Cryptosis drummer Marco Prij.
After their first release simply titled “Demo I” this riff-based trio is now dropping “Luciferian Age” EP with a follow-up planned for later this year. Now that it’s gripped you, let’s let the devil take the lead.
This sonic assault starts off with ‘Draugr’. What is a Draugr anyways? Old Norse defines it as a revenant – the reanimated of the deceased inside the burial mound. It boasts an atmospheric beginning that quickly turns into a driving, pulsing beat. The classic black metal elements here are what catch your ear and leave you wanting more. Think of a modern day Bathory.
The next offering is the title track, ‘Luciferian Age’ – a more digestible tune for those newer to the scene. Almost dance-able! Dancing to black metal – who knew? Either way, you’ll find yourself yelling along with Sebastian all the same. For me, this is the track that is the binding seal of this offering.
‘Wrath Of A False God’ starts off at a banshees’ pace that slides into a very melodic breakdown showcasing the technical skills that both Johan and Sebastian possess. The final track is the cover version of Kreator’s ‘Pleasure To Kill’. It holds true to the original and is masterfully reworked leaving you wanting more than just the four songs we have been given.
