Death metal and H.P Lovecraft share a very special bond. Early works of Obituary, Nile, Nocturnus, Deicide and Morbid Angel were clearly inspired by it beyond a doubt. Massacre from Florida has been almost exclusively represented by the cosmic horror and other worldly forms of terror since their strong debut in 1991.

However there is a big contrast between the intertwined myths of H.P Lovecraft and the music by Massacre. While Lovecraft’s work is labyrinthine, irregular and twisted, Massacre’s music is rather simplistic and still attached to the late 80’s riffage and composition making this album named “Resurgence” a very respectable return.

Their music is still loyal to the early work of the band Death. And that is fine! Simple but with good taste, fast enough, clear sound and production without plasticity. Also it is very evident that the band is trying to mix some cinematic passages with their usual heaviness in simple riffs.

Crystal clear guitar sound, decent bass frequencies and drums not sounding like a drum machine for a change.
Guitar solos are very creative and atmospheric, serving as passages more than showcasing how many notes he can play. The ability of Fairfax to edit and choose is very evident.

Refreshing, Theatric

Special kudos to Kam Lee for exploring his cavernous throat and invoke Shub Niggurath. This dude’s vocals are sounding very refreshing and theatric sometimes, making this album a very interesting musical and guttural passage to get lost in.

There is a thrashy presence all throughout this album that cannot be ignored. Songs like “Book of The Dead”, “Into the Far-Off Void” and “Fate of the Elder Gods” are perfect examples of it.

This album is musically fresh but orthodox, and I imagine that old school fans like myself will be very pleased when the nostalgia of the powerful Florida scene comes back to life… or shall we say never completely dead but sleeping in a mesmerizing slumber.

Cthulhu laughs as you eternally try to invoke him record after record.
Maybe it is time for bands to look for another deity to invoke.
Leave Cthu alone!!
